Frequently Asked Questions for Families
New to ABA Therapy

Getting Started

1. What is ABA therapy? Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science-based approach that helps children and young adults learn important skills and reduce behaviors that may interfere with learning or daily life by teaching safer, more effective ways to communicate needs and navigate everyday situations. At iCare Therapy, ABA focuses on understanding how behavior works and using positive, supportive strategies to teach communication, social, self-help, and learning skills in ways that are meaningful to your child and family. 2. Why was ABA therapy recommended for my child? ABA is commonly recommended because it has a strong history of research supporting its effectiveness for children with autism. Your child’s care team believes ABA can support your child’s development, independence, and quality of life by building skills that matter most at home, school, and in the community. 3. What does “in-home ABA therapy” mean? In-home ABA therapy takes place in your child’s natural environment—your home. At iCare Therapy, we believe therapy is most effective when it happens where real life happens. This allows our team to work on meaningful, real-world skills such as communication, daily routines, play, and behavior, while also supporting families as active partners in the process.

What Therapy Looks Like

4. Who will be working with my child? Your child’s ABA team typically includes: • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA): The clinical supervisor who designs and oversees your child’s individualized treatment plan. • Registered Behavior Technician (RBT): The therapist who works directly with your child during sessions under the supervision of the BCBA. All team members are trained to work with children and families respectfully, ethically, and with care. 5. What will an ABA session look like? Sessions are structured but flexible. Therapy often looks like play, learning activities, and everyday routines. Your child may work on goals such as communication, understanding expectations, participating in routines, self-care skills, emotional regulation, or social interaction—always using reinforcement strategies, encouragement, and motivation. 6. Will my child be forced to do things? No. Ethical ABA therapy does not use punishment or force, and respects each child’s autonomy, consent, and right to choice. At iCare Therapy, services are child-centered and respectful, emphasizing choice, motivation, and positive reinforcement. Your child’s comfort, dignity, and safety are always priorities.

Your Child & Your Family

7. How is my child’s ABA program created? Your child’s BCBA will complete an assessment to understand their strengths, needs, and interests. From there, an individualized treatment plan is developed with clear, measurable goals. Families are encouraged to share their priorities and values, so therapy focuses on what matters most to you. 8. How many hours of ABA therapy will my child need? Recommended hours vary based on your child’s individual needs, age, and goals. Some children benefit from fewer hours focused on specific skills, while others may need more comprehensive support. Your BCBA will explain their recommendation and adjust the plan as your child progresses. 9. How long will my child need ABA therapy? There is no one-size-fits-all timeline. Some children benefit from ABA for a shorter period, while others receive services over several years. Progress is reviewed regularly, and goals evolve as your child gains new skills and independence.   10. How are parents and caregivers involved? Family involvement is a core part of our approach. iCare Therapy provides parent and family education so strategies can be used consistently throughout daily life. You are never expected to become a therapist—just an informed, supported partner in your child’s progress. 11. Will ABA change who my child is? ABA is not about changing your child’s personality, masking autistic traits, or taking away who they are. Our goal is to support your child in learning skills that help them communicate, feel understood, and navigate their world more comfortably and independently—while honoring who they are as an individual.

Practical Questions

12. How do you track progress? Progress is tracked through ongoing data collection and observation during sessions. RBTs document skill development and challenges, allowing the BCBA to make informed, thoughtful decisions about what is working and when to adjust goals. Families receive regular updates and opportunities to review progress. 13. Does insurance cover ABA therapy? Many insurance plans cover ABA therapy, though coverage varies. Our team will help guide you through insurance verification, authorizations, and benefit questions so the process feels as clear and manageable as possible. 14. What if I’m unsure or nervous about starting ABA? That’s completely normal. Many families feel overwhelmed at first. We encourage you to ask questions, share concerns, and move at a pace that feels right. Our role is to support both your child and your family every step of the way. 15. How do we get started? Once your child is referred, our intake team will guide you through the next steps, including verifying insurance, scheduling assessments, and answering any questions. You don’t have to navigate this alone—iCare Therapy is here to help.
